1 〔疑問〕 what; what kind [sort] of….

●何のこと ⇒なんのこと.

●彼らは何のために戦い続けるのか. Why do they keep on fighting? | What do they keep on fighting for?

・私が何の用で来たかおわかりですか. Do you know what business I came here on?

・こんな夜中に一体何の用だ. What business brings you here in the middle of the night like this?

・今日は何の試験ですか. What examination [《口》 exam] do you have today?

・これは何のの種だろう. What kind of seed is this?

・「あれは何のの声だろう」「カケスですよ」 “What kind of bird makes that noise?”―“It's a jay.”

●何の問題もなく without a hitch [accident]

・何の苦もなく without any difficulty; with perfect ease

・何の断りもなく with no notice whatever

・何の役にも立たない be good for nothing; be utterly useless; it is no use 《doing》

・あいつは何の役にも立たない男だ. He's a good-for-nothing.

・そんなことを知っても何の役にも立ちはしない. It does no good to know such things.

●両者には何の相違もない. There is no difference between them.

・こんな物には何の価値もない. This kind of thing has no value whatever.

・貴殿のご参加には何の支障もありません. There are no obstacles whatsoever to your participation.

3 〔相手の懸念を打ち消して〕

●「大丈夫ですか」「なんのこれしき」 “Are you all right?”―“Oh! It's nothing.”

・なんの, 怒ってなんぞいませんよ. Why should I get angry?

・「おいしくないでしょう?」「なんのなんのうまいよ」 “I suppose it doesn't taste very good, does it?”―“No, no, it does!”

何の気なしに unintentionally; without thinking much of it; 〔悪気なしに〕 in all innocence; 〔たまたま〕 accidentally.

●亡くなっていたとも知らず, 何の気なしにお母さん元気などと彼に聞いてしまった. In all innocence, I asked him how his mother was, not knowing that she had died.

・何の気なしに声をかけた相手がなんと小学校の同級生だった. The person I casually called out to turned out to be a classmate from my elementary school days.

なんの(って)

●その痛いのなんの(って), 涙が出たよ. It was so painful that tears came to my eyes.

・その刺身のうまいのなんの(って), 日本人に生まれてきてよかったと思ったね. That sashimi was so delicious that I felt grateful to have been born Japanese.

・彼女が喜んだのなんの(って), 君に見せたかったよ. I wish you could have seen how overjoyed she was.

・やつが怒ったのなんの(って), すごかったぜ. You should have seen how angry that guy was. It was really something!
